PSHE
Personal, Social & Health Education has never been more important than in today’s modern and ever-changing world. In our rapidly evolving society, it is very difficult for young people to make sense of the altering values and attitudes that accompany our “shifting sand” global culture. PSHE promotes pupils' personal, social and emotional development, as well as their health and wellbeing. It provides the knowledge, skills and attributes pupils need to lead healthy, safe, responsible and fulfilled lives. Pupils learn about businesses and different types of work, how to manage money and budget.
PSHE is a non-examined subject which covers topics such as:
Having an opinion Basic First Aid
Choosing a career Fair Trade
Study Skills Political parties
Animal exploitation Coping with death
The spread of globalisation Staying safe
Having an opinion World Conflicts
Investigating charities Working with others
The ultimate aim of the subject is to help students understand some of the major issues and provide a platform for them to develop their own opinions about their changing world. The most important place to start is with the individual. Everyone matters. It is a vital process for students to know who they are and what their role is in the various communities in which they operate (home, school, club, and community). PSHE enables pupils to become effective learners and supports them as they move from childhood through adolescence to become independent young people and effective citizens.
PSHE helps pupils to:
• acquire knowledge and understanding of themselves, of others and of the world they live in;
• develop skills for living;
• understand and manage their emotions;
• become morally and socially responsible;
• take on a range of roles and relationships;
• value themselves and respect others;
• contribute to their community;
• appreciate difference and diversity;
• participate actively in our democracy;
• safeguard the environment;
• act in the wider world in a way that makes the most of their own and others’ human potential.
Overall it has been a very exciting and demanding year in PSHE. We have also been pushing the theme of ‘Philosophy for Kids’ – an ongoing topic that aims to encourage students to consider others’ opinions, express their own views and ‘think outside the box’!
