  ENGLISH

The limits of my language mean the limits of my world’ – Ludwig Wittgenstein

English is a subject which is at the core of every other in the curriculum; the ability to communicate effectively is needed in every classroom, and beyond. At DESC, the English Department aims to help our students develop into confident, clear and able communicators in both speech and writing. We encourage wide and adventurous reading by all students through weekly reading lessons at Key Stage 3, complemented by further reading outside of the classroom.

Our staff:

Head of Department:  Ms. Amy Kirkwood

Second in Department:  Mrs. Susan M’Timet

English Teacher:  Mrs. Carli Minchin

English Teacher:  Ms. Jessica Stephens

English Teacher:  Mrs. Dawn Hollingworth

Teaching and Learning:

All English classrooms are equipped with an interactive whiteboard and projector, and all students have access to a dictionary and a thesaurus to facilitate the development of vocabulary and language skills.

We use broad and varied activities and resources in the classroom to cater for different learning styles and to help all students realize their potential. All students are assessed in Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing, and are encouraged to build on and develop these skills throughout all Key Stages. Assessment criteria is shared explicitly with students for each piece of work and is also displayed in each classroom.

Examples of good work are displayed in both classrooms and corridors, and we have a strong praise and reward culture in the Department, reinforced by a public Praise Board which individually mentions students who have produced outstanding work or effort.
